Retail sales up $337M
PA Wellington Retail sales during the June 1981 quarter jumped 17.9 per cent to $2218.5 million. For the corresponding period last year sales totalled $lBBl.l million.
Figures released by the Statistics Department on Monday showed that sales adjusted for seasonal fluctuations increased 18.3 per cent between the June quarter. 1980, and the June quarter. 1981, and 5.3 per cent between the March and June 1981 quarters. The corresponding increase between the December. 1980 and March. 1981, quarters was 4.7 per cent. Seasonally adjusted and deflated to remove the effects of price changes, the volume of sales increased 1.2 per cent between the March and June 1981 quarters. This compared with an increase of 1.5 per cent between the December, 1980, and March. 1981. quarters. The June monthly survey of retail trade showed that in June, 1981, the total value of sales was $728.6 million, an
increase of 21 per cent over June. 1980. After adjusting for seasonal changes in purchasing patterns, sales in June showed an increase of 2.3 per cent compared with May. 1981.
