Awards made for inventions
PA ’ Wellington The Meat Research Institute has been awarded the 1981 U.D.C. Inventor’s Award for a process which helps tenderise frozen meat. The institute developed the accelerated conditioning process using electrical stimulation for a more evenly tender meat and shortening the "conditioning" time at the meat works. Inventions which won the individual classes were: An industrial- “contra-shear screen” invented by Mr GBurgess, of Auckland, and
used in the cleaning of industrial and sewage waste; an advanced development of the Hamilton marine jet propulsion system' by a Christchurch engineer, Mr R. Turnbull, to allow the system to be applied to larger craft; the damping system of lead or rubber shock absorbers to protect high buildings from earthquakes, developed by two D.S.I.R’ scientists, Mr W. Robinson and Mr R. Skinner; and a circular table tennis table invented by Mr E. Arndt, of Auckland, which allows seven players to play at one time.
