Black killed in S.A. unrest
NZPA Johannesburg One black youth was killed and a policeman and a black youth were seriously injured on Saturday when the police and several hundred black high-school pupils clashed at Vosloorus in Transvaal province. the Johannesburg "Star" has reported.
The clash broke out during a demonstration in front of the home of Veli Nkosi. a young black who was killed by the police during a chase two weeks ago and was buried on Saturday.
According to the “Star." Richard Phoko. a high-school pupil, was killed by gunfire during the clash.
Some of the demonstrators were armed with stones, bricks, and other objects, and several police vehicles were damaged during the disturbance. the newspaper said.
Meanwhile, in a fresh move to solve the problem of black squatters on the outskirts of Cape Town. South African Government
officials have visited the Nyanga camp with the offer of jobs elsewhere in the country.
The Minister of Co-opera-tion and Development (black affairs) (Dr Piet Koornhof) said that more than 1000 jobs had been found for them.
The plight of the squatters at Nyanga was widely publicised last week when the police demolished their flimsy shacks with bulldozers. Opposition parliamentarians condemned the action and local Church groups provided food for the homeless.
Many of the squatters set up flimsy dwellings of branches and plastic sheets after arriving from rural areas in search of work. But officials said there was already high unemployment among blacks in the Cape. The Government rejected allegations that it was acting inhumanely and said it had given the squatters two years' notice to vacate their makeshift accommodation.
