Birth rate falls
PA Wellington The number of births registered in New Zealand last year fell by more than 2600 on 1979, the annual report of the Justice department showed yesterday. The report, tabled in Parliament by the Minister of Justice (Mr McLay), showed that 54,575 births were registered in New Zealand last year, compared with 56,828 the previous year. While births were down, deaths and marriages were up. The department regis-
tered 26,880 deaths (25,405 in 1979) and 22,999 marriages (22,699 in 1979). The department said that registry office weddings would continue to be available. The demand for registry office weddings had been reviewed since the introduction of independent civil marriage celebrants and there still remained a “definite demand,” the report said. The department would continue to encourage the use of civil celebrants as an alternative to registry office weddings.
