New act ‘harmful to mining’
PA Auckland More companies could abandon plans for mining in New Zealand once proposeed new legislation comes into effect, says the president of the Mineral Exploration Association, Mr John Lawrey. He was commenting on the announcement that Amax Exploration (N.Z.), Inc., had abandoned a prospecting licence application for an
area near Katikati, in the Bay of Plenty. The company said that the main reason was that early investigation showed little prospect of mining in commercial quantities, but new legislation also influenced the decision. Mr Lawrey. said that the average time for obtaining a prospecting licence now was 18 months. He estimated that this would take at least six
months longer under the new act.
Applications would also cost more in future, and it was likely that many people interested in mining in New Zealand would give up rather than face a more difficult application process. He forecast a big backlog in the hearing of objections once the legislation came into effect.
