Erebus site a ‘tomb’
The site of the Air New Zealand DCIO disaster in the Antarctic has been declared a “tomb” by signatories to the Antartic Treaty. The Antarctic Treaty consultative meeting at Buenos Aires, Argentina last month had adopted a commemorative resolution noting the death of the 257 passengers and crew who died when the aircraft crashed into the slopes of Mount Erebus during a sightseeing flight. Noting that in spite of the determined and Courageous action of members of the New Zealand and United States Antarctic expeditions, some bodies had not been recovered and that no permanent memorial could be put on the ice slopes at the site of the tragedy; the meeting resolved the area be declared a tomb.
The resolution expressed sympathy with the relatives of the dead. -
