Generators destroyed
Greymouth reporter The two generators at the Kaniere Forks power station were destroyed by fire on Sunday morning, and the station will be out of commission for between three and four months. However, there will be no noticeable effect on the power supply. The station is one of 10 from which the West Coast Electric Power Board generates electricity.
The Hokitika Volunteer Fire Brigade had to' pump water from a tail race to put out the fire, which is thought to have been caused by a fault in the generators. Repairs are expected to cost about $40,000.
