Tallifer may repeat at Dannevirke

Special correspondent Wellington

The ease with which Tallifer won the corresponding event on Saturday makes him the logical selection for the Lake Station Handicap, first leg of the double at the Dannevirke Hunt Club’s meeting at Hastings today.

Tailifer waltzed home eight lengths clear of a similar field, on Saturday, to which he meets today and though he has been penalised 2.5 kg for that win he should prove the hardest to beat.

Indian Lass, a newcomer to the meeting, looks Tailifer’s main threat. She is in fine form at present and in her last four starts she has won twice and been placed second and third in the other. Her last start win over Honorville, a rival todays was only narrow but she showed her staying powers. Headed half-way down the Wanganui straight, she rallied for rider Phillip Mercer and came back to win by half a neck. Mercer rides her again today.

Retinere was a useful seventh on Saturday, and any rain which may have dampened the track would help her along. Justawish returned an eyecatching run for second ’on Saturday and she would have to rate some chance again. The veteran Hastings trainer, Ron Saxon, has Manuaroha in the Hinerangi Handicap, second leg of the double, and though the

mare’s form is not outstanding a bold run would not surprise.

Manuaroha's only real show of form in her last five starts was a close second on the track back in June, and not having raced for nearly a month she should be on the fresh side and is expected to race well. •

Miss Cool upset at Trentham and proved that run was no fluke by running on strongly for fourth seven

days later at Levin. The 16(H)m today should suit her.

Pronto Gold and Bunratty Castle both ran useful races on the first day. Pronto Gold was well supported but didn't

fire as expected on Saturday, but that run may have improved him and Bunratty Castle ran on well enough to suggest the extra 200 m today will suit him.
