Child care centres

Sir,—As an owner-operator of. a child care centre licensed ' to provide for the care of up to 40 children, and not using one cent of ratepayers’ funds, it saddens me to draw the only conclusions that I can from the reported decisions of your City Council. The council runs a day care centre and creche in Christchurch at quoted annual loss figures beyond comprehension. Ratepayers, many of them no doubt hard-pressed, are forced to dig deeper into their pockets to subsidise such losses when in the city, private child care centres have a great number of full-time vacancies available. The council suggests that it be provided with further subsidy at the expense of, in addition to city ratepayers, the taxpayers of New Zealand. The idea that taxpayers’ monej' be provided at no cost (?) to enable the council to purchase additional centres to run, no doubt, at further loss, is beyond comprehension.—Yours, etc.,

CHRISTINE SNODGRASS. New Plymouth. July 30. 1981.
