Non-aligned New Zealand
Sir,—Mr Taiboys, in his farewell speech, repeats again that "New Zealand could not be non-aligned.” Yet the real consequences of alignment are not, of course, even mentioned. Mr Taiboys speaks of .sinister Russian submarines and ships roaming the Pacific and asks: “What is the purpose? I do not know." But <the horrendous
fleet of Poseidon and Trident monsters of our “ally” are ignored. Since the well-worn and unconvincing bogies of Russians with snow still on their boots and rumbling Soviet tanks coming down the High Street make no sense in the “perspective of the South Pacific," we are asked to turn pale at the thought of a "Soviet fishing base somewhere in the Islands." The perspective "as viewed by Washington, Tokyo. Canberra and Wellington" is about as real and true as a view in a hall of mirrors. — Yours, etc., K. FEA. August 3. 1981.
