Noble Bijou fillies share S.I. sales record

by

W. R. CARSTON

Two three-year-old daughters of the Mosgiel-based stallion. Noble Bijou, will, at least for another year, share the honours of being the record-priced stock ever to pass through the ring at a South Island Bloodstock Sale. These two youngsters in the untried section of the catalogue both changed hands for $35,000 at the fourteenth renewal of the sales held in Christchurch yesterday. The previous best was the $30,000 paid for the broodmare. Kindle, at the corresponding sale 12 months ago. Both fillies were offered late in the day. The first, an attractive chestnut out of the Underwood marg, Satinette, which has' already left the two top-class performers in Caparo and Brown Satin, was purchased by the Riddleworth Stud. Masteron. Her Christchurch vendor was Mr R. J. Randle.

The other, a bay out of the Final Court mare, Dissent, will do her future racing in Australia. The half-sister to the Moonee Valley Cup winner, Poker Night, was the last of three lots purchased by Mr F. Horwood, of Sydney. She was offered by Mr C. F. Clark, of Tarras, Central Otago. Mr Horwood, one of the most active Australians at the sale, spent $57,000 altogether. He paid $13,000 for a brown colt by Weyand from Lovely Melody offered on behalf of Mr C. A. Booth, of Heiot, and $9OOO for a Noble Bijou—Mellay Venture colt, one of the draft from the White Robe Lodge Stud at Mosgiel. The Weyand colt is closely related to" Golden Rhapsody, winner of this year’s Doomben Cup. and is from the same family as the grand stayer, Il Tempo. Altogether Australians contributed $119,100 towards the sale aggregate of $422, 010.

Second-lop price paid by an overseas buyer was $19,000 paid by Mr D. Mack, of Mordiallac, Victoria. He had to go to that figure to secure a daughter of Imperial Guard and the topclass racemare, Lynda Mary, offered on bealf of Mr I. C. Clark, of Nightcaps. Well-bred fillies were keenly sought. Top price in

the two-year-old section of the catalogue was the $20,000 paid by Wrightson N.M.A.. on behalf of a Hamilton client, for a daugter of Noble Bijou and the Lionhearted mare, Lynmara. The vendors of this attractive youngster were Mr and Mrs D. S. Harvey, of Gore.

Most active among the local buyers was last season's leading trainer, Graeme Rogerson, of Te Rapa. He outlaid $32,500 to secure four two-year-old colts.

■ Although there were the occasional dull periods and at times passings were frequent, the over-all result could generally be considered satisfactory despite failing to kkeep pace with inflation. The 120 lots which changed hands this year brougt only $22,910 more than last year's aggregate when 103 lots were sold for $399,100. The average was also down from $3875 to $3517. .
