Layby fancy for Beaufort at Riccarton today

J- BOYLE Layby and Wat's to Come, two of the few remaining runners for the great stallion Mellay. are expected to go close to winning two of the feature races on the second dav of the Grand National meeting at Riccarton today. Layby is one of the obvious chances in the Beaufort Steeplechase, first leg of the T.A.B. treble, after a workmanlike winning performance in the Enfield Steeplechase last Saturday. Wat's to Come, fifth in at 1400 m in the Paparua Handicap on the first day of the meeting, will step up to something closer to his best distance in the Heathcote Handicap (1800 m the first leg of the T.A.B. double. Wat’s to Come goes into today’s race as the mount of Gary Blair. Fleetwood Mac, Blair’s mount in the Winter Cup on Saturday, will be ridden today by Jim Collett. This was a successful combination earlier in the winter, but not, more recently, at the Wellington winter meeting. However, Polly Porter’s half-brother has gathered respect for some doughty efforts on past winter campaigns at Riccarton. He won the Heathcote Handicap at double-figure odds last year.

The successful North Island jockey David Walsh, a newcomer at the meeting, has secured the mount on Good Way. He did not really get into the race in the Winter Cup on Saturday, but his record over longer trips compels attention.

His most recent run beyond 1600 m produced a third in the Parliamentary Handicap.

Lady Link, the Winter Cup fifth, will be Otago’s brightest hope if she has held her form since Saturday. The sprinter. Swaps, will be the North Island's only runner in the Selwyn Handicap, second leg of the T.A.B. double and T.A.B. treble. He found the demands of pacemaking more than he could manage in the 1600 m Winter Cup, but is a recent winner over 1400 m, the distance of today’s race. Before he was brought south this Balkan Knight gelding from Te Awamutu won over 1400 m at the Taumarunui meeting then ran second over 1600 m at Te Rapa. Red Rebel and Hikohiko are newcomers at the meeting, but last-start winners on the South Canterbury circuit, and they present interesting form clashes that have to be

weighed against the promise of Supremity's second and Ernest's fourth in Saturday’s Paparua Handicap. South Canterbury form will also be held in regard for the Woolston Handicap, third leg of the T.A.B. treble. Nottingham Note has won at her last three starts, two of them at Washdyke.

In her most recent victory, on a heavy track at the South Canterbury Hunt Club's meeting, she had a margin of close to eight lengths to show as a measure of her superiority over the others at 1200 m.
