Screenwriter dies
NZPA-Reuter New York Paddy Chayefsky, the award-winning screenwriter of such films as “Network” and “Marty." died yesterday of cancer in New York. He was 58. Chayefsky’s work ranged from the absorb to the poignant to the angry, and included scripts for theatre, film and television.
He was born in New York city in 1923. “Marty,” the story of a lonely butcher, was his first main success. Ernest Borgnine won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of the title character. He also won an Oscar for his screenplay for “Network,” a biting satire about television.
