Poor squash
Canterbury players did poorly in the opening rounds of the New Zealand squash championships which started in Auckland on Saturday. ■ Rod Hayes is the only Christchurch player unbeaten of the seven men and two women who contested the open. Seeded sixth, Hayes has dropped two games in his three matches to date. On Saturday, he beat Douglas Bank. 6-9. 9-2, "9-3, 9-2, and Mervyn Tapp. 9-6, 9-5, 9-6. Yesterday he beat Andrew Sinclair, 5-9, 9-5. 94, 9-5.. . Today Hayes will play the top Brownlee. Brownlee, as with all the other seeds, has had little difficulty in the open-
ing. founds, dropping only 10 points in his three matches’, Most- interest in the women's section is jocused on the match between Joanne Milne and Jenny Webster, seeded fourth and fifth respectively. Their match this afternoon might decide which player is picked in the New Zealand side to tour Canada later this year. Yesterday Webster beat the Canterbury No. 1. Phillipa Idour. 9-5, 9-3, 9-4. In the first round Idour overcame. Linda McClure, 9-6, 4-9, 9-2. 9-4. Lorna Symes, the only other Canterbury woman in the open, lost to Parh Guy. 3-9; 3-9,' 9-7. 3-9, in her, first match.
