Secret vote wanted
All unions should be compelled to hold secret ballots before strike action was decided, National Party delegates said at the week-end. The Trade Union Act, 1908, did not require secret ballots before strikes. Members called for secret ballots if they dared. With “heavies” standing, near, few had the courage to vote against strike action in a public vote. In a number of industries
strike votes were decided on a show.of hands. In Westport in one company at which workers were holding a secret ballot, votes cast were declared invalid if they were not signed by the voter, said a West Coast delegate, Mr D. A. Mcßeth. In a Railways Union ballot, voters had to put names and addresses on secret ballot papers said another delegate.
