Call to end strikes
a remit seeking to make the Cook Strait ferries strikefree was passed by a National Party conference committee on Saturday. Delegates objected to considerable disadvantages and cost to passengers when ferries were suddenly cancelled by industrial action, but conceded that the remit was probably “a dream.” The ferry was a bridge between the North and South Islands, and safety should be the only reason for not sailing, delegates said. Although most delegates agreed that withdrawal of the right to strike was “totally unacceptable,” the remit was passed to record objections to needless disruption of the ferry service.
