Snow stops slaloms
Heavy snowfalls at Mount Hutt during the week-end precluded the running of the Mount Cook Line men’s and women’s slaloms which were to have launched the Europa F.I.S. ski-racing series.
About 60cm of new snow had fallen by yesterday afternoon and no racing was possible on either day. Sixtysix men (from nine countries) and 29 women (five countries) were entered for the events.
Ironically, these events were originally scheduled for Coronet Peak, but were transferred to Mount Hutt because of a lack of snow at the former venue.
Those Coronet Peak events may yet be held at Mount Hutt next week-end. In the meantime, though, all concentration is on the preparation of the course for the glamour event — the spectacular, high-speed Air New Zealand downhills laid down for Thursday and Friday. Some of the world’s top downhill racers — from Austria, Canada, Germany, France, and Italy — are at Mount Hutt and it is hoped they will be able to begin training on the 2149 m course this afternoon. Grooming of the course has continued while the snow has been falling.
