2 die in deer ’copter
PA Rotorua Two men were found dead in a deer recovery helicopter discovered yesterday in Whirinaki River, near Murupara. 70 kilometres east of Rotorua, the police said. They were Boyd Stephen Gare, aged 25, of Taupo, the pilot, and Richard Dean Spent, aged 30, of Havelock North.
Senior-Sergeant Fred Jamieson, of the Rotorua Police, said that the two men left Murupara late on Saturday on a deer recovery trip. When they were reported overdue about 7 p.m. another helicopter made a quick but unsuccessful search.
Early yesterday a R.N.Z.A.F. Iroquois helicopter made a search of the bush. The crew found the wrecked helicopter on the riverbed, near the western boundary of the Urewera National Park, shortly before noon.
The Iroquois carried the bodies to Rotorua.
