Cashmere-Wanderers is one win from taking the Hertz Soccer League northern zone title after its 5-0 hammering of the bottom-placed Timaru City in Timaru on Saturday.

Its final match next week-end is also against Timaru City, and it would be the biggest upset of the season if Cashmere is unable to take both points from that game. Nomads United kept alive its faint hopes of catching Cashmere with a 3-1 win over Technical at' Tulett Park. Technical began strongly and largely dominated the opening 30 minutes. It took the lead through a Michael Millward penalty, but Nomads pulled level five minutes before halftime through Malcolm Parker; Nomads improved its play in the second half and further goals came from Parker, from a penalty. and Alan Munro.

Western retained third position despite being beaten, 0-1, by Shamrock in an even tussle at MacFarlane Park. John van Opzeeland scored from one of the few scoring opportunities shortly before the end. That win lifts Shamrock above New Brighton into the vital fourth position. With the league likely to become regional next winter, the top four sides are assured of places in that competition. • Brighton was held to a 1-1 draw by Burndale United. Warren Quirke put Brighton ahead after half-time and it had several

reasonable chances to make sure of the win before Rod Renfrew snatched an equaliser four minutes from the end.

Halswell United missed a penalty in the final minute and had to settle for a 2-2 draw’ with Northern Hearts at Halswell Domain.
