Hagley’s narrow win
Hagley II had the narrowest winning'margins in its A grade inter-club badminton contest against Knox in the penultimate round of play at the Skellerup Hall on Saturday.
The Hagley team just scraped home on a games countback to win, nine games to eight. This was a meritorious performance, considering Knox won three of the four singles matches. The
crucial game was the No. 2 women's singles, in which Bev Leopold took a game off Lvnda Kitchingham. before going down in three games. All the other matches did not last beyond straight games, and all were won by reasonably convincing margins. Only four matches were played, with several players being involved in a junior divi-
sion championship in Invercargill over the week-end. Consequently, the top three teams. Hagley I, Railway I. and South Brighton, and Bryndwr II were involved in postponements. Canterbury beat Christchurch, 6-2. but several of the matches were particularly close. Paul Terrace secured one of Christchurch's wins, but only after beating Alan Spinks. 18-17, in setting in the deciding game.
Audrey Smith had to battle hard before overcoming Gay Askew in three games; Don Le Page and Janine Feek also needed setting in the third to head off Rob Manderson and Christine Erikson. University had the best win, 71, over Mairehau. Apart from its solitary loss, University conceded just one game in the contest, in the women's doubles. Bryndwr I was too strong for Railway 11. winning, 6-2. Graham Rogers gave a determined display to beat Mark Reid in the No. 2 men's singles, with two of the three games going to setting. Points, with four teams being a match behind, are: Hagley I 123, Railway I 118. South Brighton 98. Bryndwr I 73, Hagley 11, Knox 63. Mairehau 57. University 54. Canterbury 51.
