Lamb sales dry up on British market

PA Wellington Sales of New Zealand lamb on the United Kingdom market have all but dried up in the face of supplies from Britain’s own farmers becoming available, according to the Meat Export Council.

The council’s information officer, Mr Robert Ewan, said that early last week a main exporter of lamb to the United Kingdom, Towers International, withdrew from the market. Other exporters have since followed suit. Their action results from the United Kingdom lamb price becoming lower than was considered’ acceptable. Rather than following the price down, stocks have been withdrawn from sale.

Supplies of lamb from the British farmer were expected to start coming on to the market about now, and New Zealand’s exporters generally try to sell the bulk

of their United Kingdom destined supplies on that market from January through to July.
