Tramper’s body recovered
A helicopter yesterday recovered the body of a young Christchurch tramper who died when he plunged over a bluff into a creek bed near Arthur's Pass on Sunday. He was
Christopher Andrew Mackay, aged 17, a student, of Cannon Hill Crescent. Mount Pleasant.
Mr Mackay had been tramping with two friends on Sunday in the Avalanche Peak area, west of the Arthur's Pass township, when the party encountered deep snow, said the Otira policeman, Constable Peter Cox. They had headed down into a’basin to find a way out
by wav of a creek, said Constable Cox. Mr Mackay, who was in the lead, lost his footing and slid down a snow-covered tussock slope, through some scrub, and had fallen about 45 metres (150 ft into a creek bed.
His companions searched in vain for him before walking out to Arthur's Pass to raise the alarm.
Two rangers went into the area late on Sunday night w‘ith torches and called for Mr Mackay, but got no response. A Royal New Zealand Air Force Iroquois helicopter from Wigram found and recovered the body about 8 a.m. .yesterday.
