Petrol lead level
Lead-free* petrol should be made available in New Zealand -by 1985, the same year that Australia ■ intended to introduce ' it,' the Labour Shadow Minister for the Environment, and member for Papanui (Mr M. K. Moore) has said.
The lead level in New Zealand petrol was among the highest in the. world, he said. There were 0.79 grams of lead per litre of petrol in New Zealand compared with Australia, 0.53, Britain, 0.4, West Germany, 0.15, and Japan, 0.06. The New Zealand level
was an outrage, for a country that prided itself in putting'health first, he said. “Leaded petrol is a nochoice pollutant that we have to walk through in our cities,” he said. “That is why it is urgent that the Government take steps to alleviate the problem. “When I am Minister, I will be asking Government departments for reports about how soon we can introduce lead-free petrol. I would be very disappointed if we could not match the Australians in 1985.”
