LYTTELTON HARBOUR PANORAMA

Lyttelton Harbour basin, with its sheltered waters, delightful bays, bush areas, rolling hillsides and plunging lava cliffs, provides a, scenic recreation area of a magnitude not often found so close to a major city. The harbour is just 11 km from Christchurch, and is a splendid venue for yachting, water-ski-ing, launch cruises, recreational fishing, and other aquatic activities. The surrounding hills are patterned with scenic walks, and there are rocky areas which provide an ideal nursery for prospective mountaineers. In addition, the harbour includes the Port of Lyttelton, one of New Zealand’s finest seaports. The pictures, taken by ROD DEW, Illustrations Editor, concentrate on the head of the harbour. The long spur on the right is Manson’s Point, zoned for future recreational use. Quail Island can be seen in the middle of the picture. The harbour is 12 km long and about 2 km wide.
