Natural increase rate slows

PA • Wellington New Zealand’s natural population increase —' the excess of births over deaths — was 24,592 for the year ended March 31, 1981. This was a decrease of about 2800 on the previous year, according to provisional figures released by the Statistics Department. In the year to March, 50,965 live births were registered, compared with 51,926 for the year to March, 1980.

The death rate rose in the year.to March, 1981. Registered deaths totalled 26,373, compared with 25,554 the previous year. The figures show a slight increase in extra-nuptial births during the last three years. In the year ended March, 1981, 11,005 extranuptial births were recorded, compared with 10,928 and 10,514 in the previous two years. In the latest period, 21.59 per cent of live births -were extra-nuptial.
