Gerard Brown, aged four, the son.of a Linwood fruiterer, needed no encouragement to bite into a crisp apple at McFarlane and Growers market yesterday morning. Gerard’s father was one of many fruit shop proprietors who showed more than a passing interest in the giant, glass-fibre, bright-green apple playhouse on displaj’ at the market. The playhouse is one of four being offered as a prize in a competition: being run in conjunction with/the promotion by the Canterbury Fruit Retailers’ Association.
