New Premier for Victoria

NZPA Melbourne Lindsay Thompson. a former schoolteacher, is Victoria’s’new Premier. He won a three-man battle for the post over his Cabinet colleagues. Bill Borthwick, aged 56. and Brian Dixon, aged 44, in Melbourne yesterday. Mr Thompson, aged 57. has been deputy to the resigning Premier (Mr Dick Hamer) for nine years. Mr Hamer announced his resignation after returning from an investment trip to the United States and Canada and into a wall of flak caused by the resignation on May 25 of the Economic Development Minister, lan Smith. Mr Smith quit, saying Mr Hamer was not strong enough to take the Liberals to victory in the state elections, about 12 months away. • Fighting for extra funds from the Federal Government was probably the most important decision for Victoria over the last few decades, Mr Thompson said. He has repeatedly said Victoria is subsidising the smaller states such as Queensland and Western Australia, and Victoria's role as “Father Christmas’’ must end.
