Cargo costs up 17%

PA Wellington In spite of an improvement in the rates of work on the New Zealand waterfront average costs of handling cargo rose last year by 17.8 per cent, according to the Waterfront Industry Commission. In its annual report tabled in Parliament, the commission said the improvement in the work rate was 6.2 per cent "per gross gang hour." It said the over-all cost of handling cargo had gone up 17.8 per cent mainly because of higher wages and national administration fund levies.
