Talks on tobacco today

PA Wellington The Cabinet economic committee will today resume consideration of the Industries Development Commission report on the tobacco industry. According to Government sources in Wellington yesterday, the committee studied the report but decided, to refer it back to departmental officers for more information. Any announcement of the Government’s decision will come from the Acting Minister of Trade and Industry (Mr Cooper) after today’s meeting. One of the key recommendations in the report is a proposal that duty-free made-up cigarettes and tobacco products be allowed into the country from any source from 1985. However, the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) has gone on record as acknowledging that there is a case for some protection for the tobacco industry. Further reports, Page 10.
