Soccer goal cause for much celebration

Scoring the first goal each season is always a good morale booster for a junior soccer team, but when that first goal also coincides with the first win then there is extra cause for celebration. On Saturday, the St Al-bans-Shirley ninth ’ grade team achieved both these feats, in its match against Western. '■ Nigel Brockenshire was the player who scored the only goal of the game to give S.A.S. its first win. A goalkick came straight but to him and Brockenshire kicked it directly back into the goal. Western had the majority of the play, but despite the efforts of Scott Williams and Chris Worley, was unable to penetrate the S.A.S. defence of Simon Mann, Glenn Ballin and Sonny Tait.

Other Western players to impress were Simon Aitchinson, Darryl Cribb and Andrew Kerr. Western's in form twelfth grade team made amends for that loss, however, with a 4-1 win over Shamrock B. On a bumpy ground at MacFarlane Park, Dean Abernathy,

Stephen Adams, Darren Aitchinson and Paul Rosengrave scored for Western. David Anderson scored for Shamrock, for whom Stephen Poole and Richard Berry defended stoutly. Dion Thomas, Shamrock’s new under-13 goal-keeper, showed considerable courage in diving at the feet of Western’s forwards to give his team a 2-0 win. Lindsay Stewart and Stuart Blackburn scored for Shamrock, while Martin Aitchinson twice hit the post. The Rangers’ club had a successful day at Riccarton Domain. Their eleventh

grade side easily beat the previously undefeated Shamrock team, 3-0, and their fourteenth grade team beat Shamrock, 4-1. Scott Webster scored twice and Lincoln Harper once for the eleventh grade side, and were well supported by Matthew Elliot, Simon Hawthorne and Anthony Symonds/ f Gerard Mooar, Shamrock's goal-keeper, Mark Whittaker and Simon Small were the pick of the beaten team. The fourteenth grade match was level at 1-1 at half-time but ,■ Rangers ran. away for a comfortable win in the second half. Jeffrey

McLaughlin scored for ■ Shamrock and Mark Oorschot for Rangers, before i Andrew Caffel and Oorschot ’ added further’ goals for j Rangers. 1 New Brighton and Sham- j rock battled out a goal-less draw in their tenth grade : i match at Ray Blank Park, j Shamrock's goal-keeper, • Brendan Lawtdn,. and An- 1 drew McLaughlin were ’ mainly responsible for keep- ■ ing Brighton scoreless.
