One hundred years ago this month the schooner Dido set sail from Lyttelton bound for Waitapu, on the Hokianga Harbour, and a few days after her departure apparently sank with the loss of all hands. The only trace of the vessel ever found, was a quantity of wreckage, including a lifebuoy and part of a boat, which washed ashore west of Cape Palliser some days later. It was thought at the time that the ballast in the 58-ton topsail schooner had shifted during a gale, causing her to capsize. In the same month, also 100 years ago, the brig Pakeha, sailing from Kaipara to Dunedin with a cargo of timber, ran ashore near Lake Ellesmere and became a total wreck. She had been within 12 miles of Otago Heads when she began to leak and her master decided to run for the shelter of Banks Peninsula. : With, sails-blown away by the gale, the captain decided to let the brig drift ashore and when she struck one mast went over the side and the sea swept the crew into the surf. ’ : There was only one survivor,,a seamaii who managed to grab a. floating spar and was -washed ■ ashore.
