Economist dies

NZPA London The British economist, Dame Barbara Ward, has died at her home in southern England after a long illness. She was 67. ■ Her death was announced by the International Institute for Environment and De-

velopment, of which she was president. Dame Barbara, who was made a life peer five years ago with the title of Baroness Jackson of Lodsworth, was at various times assistant editor of the “Economist” magazine and a governor of the British Broadcasting Corporation. Through her writings and lectures she primarily sought

a iairer share-out of the world's resources between rich and poor nations. In 1967 Dame Barbara was appointed to the Vatican’s Pontifical Commission for Justice and Peace and in 1971 became the first woman to address a synod of bishops in the Vatican. Last year she was awarded India’s Jawarhalal Nehru Memorial Award for international understanding and gave the money from the prize to an Indian leper colony she had long supported. At the time of her death she was working on a book, with an American environmentalist, Erik Eckholm, on global environment and social justice.
