Southern hydro lakes full

Storage lakes in New Zealand are 90 per cent full and so consumers can expect a winter without power cuts. South Island lakes, in fact, are 103 per cent full. Normal working levels for hydro lakes are put at 100 per cent but levels can be raised above this mark. The only South Island lake below 97 per cent is Lake Manapouri, at 68 per cent, while Lake Tekapo is 110 per

cent full. North Island lakes are only 42 per cent full. This, however, merely means that hydro lakes are 50mm below normal levels.

Recent cold mornings and evenings in Canterbury have meant that the Municipal Electricity Department and the Central Canterbury Elec-

trie Power Board have had to cut water-heaters during times of peak load. Mr P. D. Rutledge, deputy manager of the Central Canterbury board, said that about 10 hours of cuts had been made so far this winter, the maximum period being an hour. Mr E. C. Mace, chief engineer of the M.E.D., said there had been brief cuts on some of the very cold days.
