Emslie to close

N.Z. Motor Bodies, Ltd, — faced with a continuing reduction in the demand for new buses and coaches — has been forced to close down its manufacturing operations in Emslie Industries, the Dunedin division. The company has already informed the staff and the unions involved. However, it is hoped that many 'of the staff can be offered alternative jobs in the company’s main factory in Palmerston North.

The closure will be progressive with effect from the end of June and new vehicle manufacture will cease towards the end of July. “We have been chasing new orders to maintain a flow of work but because of the economic downturn many, operators have not been able to either expand their bus and coach fleets or replace existing vehicles,” said Mr A. J. Emslie, director of the company’s South Island operations. “We very much regret the closing of the plant but we have no option. We have already kept it going well

past the date when it became uneconomical and we cannot continue to run at a loss indefinitely,” he said.
