Carrier on course

NZPA-Reuter Yokosuka, Japan

The United States aircraft carrier Midway will return to Yokosuka as scheduled in spite of a controversy in Japan over whether it is carrying nuclear weapons.

A spokesman for the United States Seventh Fleet’s headquarters in Yokosuka, which has been home for the 64.000-ton carrier since November, 1973. said that the ship was expected to arrive as scheduled but declined to say when.

A Navy statement, said, “Nearly 3000 dependants of the crew members of the Midway battle group are anxiously awaiting the return of their loved ones after three-and-a-half months separation.”

The statement came shortly after the Japanese Government had decided to reject a request from Yokosuka's Mayor, Mr Kazuo Yokoyama, that the American carrier should stay away until the controversy ended.
