Light Lord to make amends at Ashburton today

Light Lord’s share of the Nicoll Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday was favouritism at about 4-to-l. However, his effort was by no means as dismal as his eighth placing would suggest.

With only average luck in the running, he should win the Bush Inn Handicap, over 3200 m against Saturday’s 2400 m, and reinstate himself as one of the more talented pacers in the intermediate classes in Canterbury.

. On Saturday he received a spendid run about three or four back on the rails, and that is more or less where he stayed until the end. No opening presented itself in the run home and he finished under restraint.

Chance Fortune has gone back 10m for his easy win In the Nicoll Handicap. It was a most impressive effort as he was with the tailenders in the back straight and had to work hard to get into a challenging position. His record over 3200 m is outstanding and he should beat most in this event. Gikama Dee, Catherine of 'Aragon, Lord Brigade and Heather Chief all paced sound races in the Nicoll Handicap and they should be the pick of the remainder. A field of very mixed Duality will contest the first leg of the double, the Queen’s Birthday Saigon Stakes. The backmarker, Vita Man, failed in the Nitoll Handicap, dropping out badly in the run home. Howfever, he was more impressive a week earlier when third in the Rangiora Winter tup, an effort which could brove a more reliable guide |o his prospects here. Take, Care, Tipperary, Localism and Worthy Del tould be the pick of the pthers, although the southerner, Kamahl, and Viewfield Skipper, could get into |he finish. Selections:—
