Spina bifida

Hopes of preventing what are technically known as neural defects, of which the best known example is spina bifida, are raised by a report from south Wales in the current “British Medical Journal.’’ The method consists of the mother taking 4 m.g. of folic acid daily before and during pregnancy, and results from tests on 44 women who already had one child with a neural defect show that none gave birth to a baby with a neural tube defect. Six of 67 who did not take the acid did give birth to such a congenitally abnormal child. It was emphasised that folic acid must be taken during the early weeks of pregnancy, as this is the critical period. — London.
