B teams in league final
Canterbury B and West Coast B will meet in the final of the South Island second division rugby league tournament at the Show Grounds on June 13. Both sides had convincing victories in the first round on Saturday. Canterbury B beat Canterbury Colts, 50-23, and West Coast B thrashed Otago-South-land, 69-16 - a total of 158 points within 80 minutes of play on adjoining grounds. The Canterbury second XIII did have some anxious moments, though, when the Colts recovered from a 12-point deficit to be in front, 23-22. early in the second half. But Canterbury B scored, another six tries in the last halfhour. Dan Lee, a centre for West Coast B, enjoyed a personal scoring spree of 36 points as his
team outclassed Otago-South-land. Both Lee and the right wing, Brent Moore, scored four tries. Results:— Canterbury B 50 (W. J. Wallace three, M. J. Smith three, J. S. Milford two. J. MacGougan two, P. D. Hall, B. Nicholson tries; Nicholson seven goals) beat Canterbury Colts 23 (L. Hale two, D. Baxter, T. Amosa, S. E. McCann tries; M. Yule four goals). Half-time, B, 22-18. Referee, Mr W. J. Menzies. West Coast B 69 (D. Lee four, B. Moore four, G. Gibson two, S. Hutton, J. Steel, J. McKinnon two, T. Daly tries; Lee 12 goals) beat Otago-Southland 16 (P. Anderson two, T. Steel, T. Moore tries; W. Rigby two goals). Halftime, 30-5. Referee, Mr T. Drake.
