University A in form against H.S. Old Boys

Just when University A was in danger of being discarded as a championshipwinning rugby side this year, the team itself offered a reminder of its potential when it overran High School Old Boys, 31-3, on Saturday, It was a performance in keeping with University As outstanding displays at the start of the scason’and while it might be struggling to make up for its three losses and stake a claim for the C.S.B. Cup it must again be favoured to retain the C.S.B. Trophy. Old Boys were forced into a secondary role from the start on Saturday and University A finished with five tries, two by Randal Scott, who is seemingly over his back injury. Mark Liddicoat contributed 11 points with his kicking and his total for the season now stands at 98. He is in no danger of being beaten to a century; John 1 Holmes (Lincoln College), 71, and Rod Latham (Linwood), ' 69. being the next highest scorers. : The University A lock, 1 Tim Lambert, won the Cellar < Ghost "player of the day” award, while at Rugby Park ' the Marist wing, Mike O’Do- ’ novan, was similarly 1 honoured after his hat-trick- i of tries against Shirley. 1 Lincoln College took a long 1

time to get points on the board against lowly Sydenham, but eventually they came and it remains the only . unbeaten team. Mark Mclntosh scored two of Lincoln College's four tries and he is the competition's leading tryscorer with nine. Marist was a little lucky to beat Shirley, the latter suffering badly through Robert Lodge having a dreadful day with his goal-kicking — he found the posts with one shot in nine. Shirley could have done with a win here, as it is getting into a dangerous position in respect to making the top eight when the split is made for the C.S.B. Trophy play-offs. With its All Black first five-eighths, Wayne Smith, in sparkling form, Belfast was able to come from behind and beat Christchurch, and Linwood gave its best display of the season to overwhelm Suburbs. New Brighton also won easily, against Albion, and Hornby won its first match since the first round when it held on to an early 7-0 lead against University B. Perhaps the most joyous clubrooms on Saturday night were Burnside’s. A penalty by David Farrant three minutes from the end gave Burnside a narrow win over Merivale-Papanui. It was

Burnside's first win of the season. Results and scorers:— UNIVERSITY A 31 (R. F. Scott. 2. G. Hipkins. J. C. Edmondson. P. McLeod, tries; M.
