Price of fish

Sir,—"Bread and butter fishermen are struggling. Profitability has declined to a level where many vessels are making no profit at all,” the president of the Commercial Fishermen's Federation is quoted as saying (“The Press,” May 27). Fishermen receive about 30c to 40c a kilogram for their catch; when I buy fresh fish from a fish shop I pay 10 to 15 times as much per kilogram. By comparison, a beef farmer receives around $1.20 a kilogram for his product; I pay “only” two to four times as much for the meat at the butcher. Yet more processing goes into the beef than the fish before it reaches the shop. So the only possible conclusion I can come to is that both I and the commercial fishermen are being massively ripped off — presumably by'the processors.—Yours, etc., BILL ROSENBERG. May 27, 1981.
