Journalists told not to gossip

PA Wellington The President of Federated Farmers, Mr A. F. Wright, has attacked the news media and called for “more facts and less speculation or gossip.”

“There was a time when the news media nursed the objective that it should reflect the trends, opinions, actions and obviously the news in the community it served,” he told Wellington Rotarians.

“Now in some quarters we are seeing the reverse. There is a strong move towards setting the trends, posturing, preaching, and providing eveything but hard facts with the expectation that the community will respond and react to the media.”

Mr Wright said that when the federation and the producer boards launched the Agrow campaign, designed to show the vital importance of agriculture to the national economy, the news media was not at first very interested.
