Dance convention begins

A twirl of brightly coloured skirls opens the fifteenth National Square and Round Dance Convention last evening. The convention, at Aranu High School, will continu; .until tomorrow evening. About 450 dancers from

Invercargill to Auckland, as well as several from Australia, are attending. The secretary-treasurer of the convention (Mr G. G. Nuttali) said yesterday that the convention was being held for the enjoyment of the dancers. No competitions

were planned. The event was small compared with those held overseas. About 40,000 people had attended a convention in the United States several years ago. New Zealand has about 40 square and round dancing

clubs, three of which are in Christchurch. At least 90 dances will be held during the five sessions The official opening by the Deputy Mayor of Christchurch, (Mr Rex Lester), will be held this evening. < ;
