Tomorrow’s marathon route

Christchurch motorists are asked to avoid roads marked in the map between Queen Elizabeth II Park and Christchurch Airport tomorrow. Roads within that corridor will be used for the inaugural Nike City of Christchurch International Marathon. The runners will use the south-western, or Port Hills, side of the roads on the route and the organisers are anxious that there be as little traffic as possible. Those who follow the competitors along the 26.2 miles

have been asked not to use the route in their cars or on bicycles, but to go from point to point using other streets. Twenty-eight traffic officers will be on duty to see that the conflicting demands of the runners and of traffic are resolved as much as possible. The 700 runners taking part in the marathon will leave from Queen Elizabeth II stadium at 10 a.m. tomorrow. The 1000 or more runners competing in the half-marathon fun-run will start at 10.10 a.m. The marathon field should

pass through North Higley Park soon after 10.30 a.m., cross the Fendalton RoadClyde Road intersection about 10.50 a.m; and circle the airport roundabout at the

halfway point soon after 11 a.m. The first runners are exEected back at Queen Elizaeth II stadium at 12.15 p.m.
