Great Northern Hurdles field The field, with comment, for the Great Northern Hurdles at Ellerslie today is:— RACE 5. T.A.B. TREBLE T.A.B. QUINELLA 1.30 p.m. GREAT NORTHERN HURDLES $24,000; 4190 m 1— MR HICKEY (14) 68 (6g, by Masthead 11-. Shargrett, trainer G. K. Sanders, Te Awamutu). Outstanding hurdler last winter when wins included Brighton, Great Northern and Wellington Hurdles. Brought to peak for this by flat racing and in fine form recently, winning over 2100 m at Te Rapa on May 16 and 2700 m at Rotorua last Saturday. R. Rokela Colours: White, navy blue diamonds, red sleeves, light blue armbands and cap. 2— BALKAN CHIEF (17) 64 (sg, by Balkan Knight-Barbado, trainer G. H. Feaver, Te Aroha): Brilliant, easy winner of Waikato Hurdles on May 9 then showed usual dash though weakening to sixth in flat 2700 m at Rotorua last Saturday. Likes to make own rules in front. T. Harrison Colours: Orange, emerald green sleeves, royal ' blue armbands and cap. 3— SOMOY (18) 63.5 (7h, by Sobig-Moy, trainer K. A. Thomson, Wanganui); Ran on a little for ninth on flat at Rotorua last Saturday and also for eiehth in Seddon Hurdles at Te Rapa on May 16. Recent racine should have improved him. Good race, though unplaced in Great Northern two years ago then won Campbell Hurdles. _ S. Jenkins Colours: Black, white spots, pink armbands and cap. 4— OFF AN’ ON (12) 62 (9h, bv BellboroughCascara, trainer W. J. Hillis, Riverton). Won brace of hurdle races during late summer but four starts since have been on flat. Remarkably won 1600 m at Riveton in April, then third to The Twinkle and King Kaka over 1600 m at Riccarton. Acquitted himself well at jumping trials at Ellerslie last Tuesday. A. Mavor Colours: Royal blue, gold band, purple armbands and cap. 5— KAZAN (7) 61.5 (7g, by Kazakstan-Du Pont, trainer E. S. Dromeool, Cambridge). Did not show up when tenth in Seddon Hurdles, at Te Rapa on Mav 16 nor in flat 2700 m at Rotorua last. Saturdav. Second to Off An’ On att jumping trials at Ellerslie last Tuesday. Last winter came second in Campbell Hurdles and won V.R.C. Grand National Steeplechase. R. Johnson Colours: Emerald green, black stars, red armbands and cap. 6— HASTY SAINT (6) 61 (7g, by Patron SaintCarriole, trainer R. A. Conning, Te Aroha); Won Seddon Hurdles last year then second to Mr Hickey in Great Northern. F.orn)_ again very sound. ' 7— MARK’S GOLD (8) 60.5 ,(6g. by Belmura-Susie Gay, trainer S. Brosnan, Matamata); Solid if unspectacular customer. Sixth in this race last year, but won Hawke’s Bay 'Hurdles. Recent fourth was at Ellerslie on May 2 and fifth was in Sedd.on Hudles on May 16. T. Gillies Colours: Red, light blue sleeves, white band and cap. 8— YOUNG JEFF (2) 60.5 (7g, by Palm BeachMisty Fox, trainer W. L. Robins,orr, Matangi). One of busiest hurdlers last year and good performance included third in this race, third in Wellington Hurdles and a win in Rimu Hurdles at Trentham. Second, four starts back,' was in Brighton Hurdles and ran on well for fifth in flat 2700 m at Rotorua last Saturday. F. Hillis Colours: Emerald green, black Maltese cross (b and f), red sleeves and cap. 9_4310 OMEGO (16) 59.5 (7g, by Entrepeneur-Mondy, trainer G. A. Rogerson, Te Rapa). Finished last in Seddon Hurdles at Te Rapa on May 16 but scored at Trentham a week earlier when ground firm. Fourth in Brighton Hurdles after nearly falling at last. Chance will recede if rain arrives. G. Cave Colours: Purple and emerald -green stripes (body and sleeves), purple and emerald green quartered cap. 10— RABALAM (13) 59 (6m, by Five Arrows-Mali-bar, trainer. E. Temperton, Awapuni); Prepared bv one of most successful trainers of jumpers. Won Glen Hurdles, beating Young Jeff at Trentham last October and in form again with easy win at Foxton on May 16 and second, under ,67.5 kg at Awapuni on May 20. Needs heavy footing. M. ; Gillies Colours. Red, lavender cap. 11— ROY ALVARO (9) 59 (Bh, by Alvaro-Royal Bride, trainers J. E. and J. W. Winder, Cambidge); Fair race for seventh in flat 2700 m at Rotorua last Saturday. Faded to tenth in Waikato Hurdles the time before. Won jnost impressively in lesser class at this meeting .last year and is very good jumper. N. Hain Colours: Orange, light green crossed sashes, dark green cap. .- f. 12— MANLY WARRIOR .‘(3). 58 (Bg, by Man, The Rail-Carola, trainer W. J. Cambridge). Maiden hurdler which has been matching the best lately. Second in Waikato Hurdles,, second, beaten half-head, in Seddon Hurdles then third to Mr Hickey in flat 2700 m at Rotorua last Saturday. Colours: White, gold sleeves, sash and cap. 13— CANDIMAN (15) 57.5 (9g by Sugar 1 AppleBourbon Rose, trainer L. A. Short, Pukekohe). Third in steeplechase at Pukekohe on May 19. Won well in Young Nick Hurdles at Ellerslie , on May 2 but ran poorly in Waikato Hurdles. C. Wood Colours: White, grey sleeves, red crossed sashes and cap. , / 14— BURNABY (11) 57 (sh, by No Quarter-Mar-etta, trainer K. B. Opie, Te Aroha). Won well at Gisborne on May 9 and in only other four hurdle races, all l?/t year, gained a first, two thirds, and a fifth. Shaped well at Ellerslie jumping trials last Tuesday. Prefers heavy footing. C. Freakley Colours: Emerald green, pink spots, sleeves and cap. 15— CRACK EVEN (4) 57 (Bg, by Even StevenPuniu Rose, trainer G. W. Pepper, Te Awamutu): Won first-up as hurdler at Te Rana on May 9 then scored again (3000 m at Pukekohe on May 19. This is much more difficult assignment but could be dangerous lightweight. Favours firm footing. G. Julius Colours: Red, black braces, black armbands, red and black quartered cap. 16— DON EMERY (5) 57 (6g, by Philoctetes-Proud Ann, trainer G. R. Ritchie, Ellerslie); Latest efforts not inspiring. Fifth at Pukekohe on May 19 then eighth at Rotorua last Saturday. In both cases against' considerably weaker fields than this. Colours: Black, gold sleeves and crossed sashes, white armbands and cap. Emergencies.— 17— BOLD SAM (10) 57 (sg, by Silver Fish IN Wild Court, trainer B. C. Russo, Te Rapa); Best efforts over fences this winter have been second to Trigon at Avondale in Aoril-f and third at Pukekohe on May 19. Well beaten in other attempts. Brosnan, Matamata); Won at Gisborne, on. May 13 then ran on well for fifth at Rotorua 'last Saturday. Other hurdles win was at Hastings last year. Not the least of chances. L.
