Dallington closest table tennis rival for Avonside

Dallington has emerged as the closest challenger to Avonside I after five rounds of the A grade club table tennis competition. Dallington’s 7-5 win over Avonside 111 in the fifth round at the Selwyn Street hall on Wednesday evening gives it eight points out of 10, two behind the strong Avonside I team.

. Four wins in the last six matches was sufficient to edge Dallington ahead: Its success was highlighted by another good performance from Simeon Cairns. Avonside I was behind. 2-1. after the first three singles matches against Avonside 11. but three wins from the following four matches ensured it of’ a comfortable win. The win would have been easier had Michael Burrowes not thrown away a 20-17 advantage against John Baxter in his first singles match. Baxter picked up five consecutive points to win.

Burrowes recovered for good wins over John Richards and the national women’s champion. Jan Morris. Graham Rhind lost his three singles, but each of them went to the deciding third game. The unfortunate Avonside IV team, the only one yet to record a win. suffered another narrow loss, to University. It was a particularly even contest, 2-2. 33. 4-4, 5-5. before University should have taken a strong advantage in the eleventh match.

Guy Halliburton led Brian Wilson. 19-16. in the final game, but Wilson battled back to win. 21-19, to give Avonside IV a 6-5 lead. In the final doubles. Glen Haszard and Mike Warren needed one game to be certain of at least one point, but they were beaten in straight games byPeter de Boer and lan McGregor.

In the fourth contest. Linwood beat Riccarton. 7-5, despite losing four singles matches. John Armstrong, the nimble veteran, was in fine touch for Riccarton. convincingly beating Michael Prisk and Tony Green, and taking Michael Hamel to a third game.
