Brochure on smelter
Brochures are being distributed in Dunedin by South Pacific Aluminium, Ltd, “to help Dunedin residents better understand the proposal” for a new smelter at Aramoana. Accompanying publicity says that the New Zealand public will get a substantial guaranteed income from the smelter, and will also reap
the benefit from expected rises in the world price of aluminium. More than 37,000 of the • illustrated brochures will be distributed “to every Dunedin household.” According to the general manager of South Pacific Aluminium (Mr J. Smith) the brochure will give people a reference T point for information about
the smelter. “While the company has always been willing to try to answer questions, we decided that the time had come to spell out just how Important this project is to Dunedin and to New Zealand,” said Mr Smith. ' In the brochure, the Labour member of Parliament for Dunedin Central, Mr B. P. MacDonell, expresses his support for the smelter. Mr MacDonell feels that with the introduction of a big industry in Dunedin, hundreds of jobs will be created locally.
