Leg cramp welcome

Suffering from leg cramps is not something many people consider an enjoyable experience but the Honolulu polio victim, Roberto Deuriarte, is one exception.

Deuriarte, who has arrived in Christchurch last Saturday to prepare for the Nike City of Christchurch International Marathon on Sunday, has a right leg almost devoid of muscle. “The other day that leg cramped up. When it did, that was such a good feeling,” he said. It was a sure sign that the big mileages he has been running have had a beneficial effect on his withered limb.

Deuriarte, who runs 5U miles and cycles 150 miles a week, hopes to complete his thirteenth marathon on Sunday. ■
