NZPA-Reuter Washington

The fire-scarred American aircraft-carrier Nimitz. carrying the bodies of 14 crewmen and the wreckage of $6O million worth of aircraft, is sailing home to Norfolk, Virginia, for repairs. A Marine Corps jet crashed on the carrier's deck at night killing the 14 crewmen, injuring 45 others, destroying four Tomcat interceptors, and damaging three Corsair II attack planes and a helicopter. The Nimitz, the world's biggest naval vessel, was cruising in the Atlantic about 100 km east of Jacksonville. Florida, when the Marine EA-6B radar-jamming plane crashed while landing. The plane skidded into parked aircraft, setting them on fire. A Navy spokesman said the 90,000 tonne carrier's nuclear propulsion system and navigation gear were undamaged. During a tour of duty in the Indian Ocean last year, the Nimitz was the base for the ill-fated American mission to rescue 52 hostages in Iran.
