Child dies in Wainuiomata house fire

PA Wellington A Wainuiomata woman tried to get two young children out of a blazing house yesterday before escaping to safety herself. The police have not named the woman, a relative of both children, but they say they are satisfied she did all she could to save the children. . ,’ “There is no doubt she did all she could, all any normal person could, to get the children out of the house.” said Senior-Sergeant N. D. Wynne, of Lower Hutt. Any suggestion the chil-

dren had been inadequately supervised was unfounded, he said. Police identification of the 18-month-old child who died in the fire had not been completed last evening. A cousin, Sam Kepa, aged four, who was .visiting the house, is reported to be in a satisfactory condition in Hutt Hospital recovering from severe smoke inhalation. Senior-Sergeant Wynne said the fire was thought to have started accidently in the lounge where the 18-month-old child was sleeping. The lounge door was closed.
