Sumner hits the lead

Sumner took the outright lead for the first time in the Blank Trophy men's division one squash competition when it comfortably beat Wigram, 8-2, in the latest round on Tuesday evening. The team's only reverse was caused by the reappearance of the former Canterbury representative. Neil Rush (Wigram), who' played good squash for a straight games victory over Sumner s No. 2. Ron Marshall. Burnside, which had shared the lead with Sumner, slipped a little down the table ater its 4-6 loss to Christchurch. This was in spite of a notable victory by the Burnside No. 3, Stuart Hargreaves, who came back from two sets down and then 3-7 down in the fifth to beat the experienced. Graham Foulds in a tense finish. Coincidentally, both are training ’ for the’ Nike marathon on Sunday and both suffered cramps, ’Hargreaves having trouble gripping his racket in the final game. Second place is now held by Christchurch Football, one of two newcomers in the grade. Football came through in two fivesetters and also in the top position even after Hamish _ . Dowell (University) managed to borrow a pair of size B‘z squash shoes from Linwood's Craig Hibbert when one of his own gave up the ghost against John Oakley. Football's only loss was a disappointing effort by Paul Monk, who led 8-2 in the third and 6-1 in the fourth against Peter Herd and failed to win another point in either game. Ashburton failed to repeat its euphoric victory of the week before against Burnside and was instead unable to take a single game off an improving Linwood side. The team was, however, without its top player, Rod Williams (in the North Island).

The other contest was a real cliff-hanger with a points countback needed before High School Old Boys II shaded Suburbs by 113 points to 111. Murray Carson needed to "skunk" John Triggs in the last to give Suburbs the decision: he got to 8-0. but Triggs

then grabbed back three points. The women's lead is retained by Christchurch 11, which is four points clear of Burnside 11. At No. 3 Wendy Dodshun came back well with improved length from 2-8 in the second, having lost the first to beat Donna O'Gradv (Burnside I), while Rose O'Sullivan only narrowly lost to Alrita Hooper after a close five-setter.

Burnside II had Jacqui James back in the fold and she came up trumps to beat Joan Terrell (Sumner I) from two sets down, only dropping six points in the last three games. Marv Hunt had the misfortune to be on the losing end of a five-set game for the third time in a row when she met Suzanne Davies.

The other winning teams w r ere Ashburton, which had its No. 1, Czesia Bowan. in really devastating form, Lancaster Park, and Sumner 11. Sumner II only dropped one match. Sally Chap’man (better known for her tennis skills) registering a good 3-1 win over Sharon Shannon. Points:—
